We are a group of six Korean artists, each working in different mediums: oil painting, acrylic painting, mixed media, wood printing, and photography. We’ve come together to present a collective exhibition titled Sounds Across Landscape: Intersection between Art and Sound.

The exhibition explores how visual art, through the use of color, form, pattern, and texture, can parallel the emotional journey that music or specific sounds take us on.  Geometric patterns, flowing shapes, or layered textures can give the impression of auditory phenomena such as harmony, dissonance, or rhythm. Both art and sound have the power to evoke deep emotions, awaken memories, and convey the energy of life.  Although our styles are distinct, each of our works relates to the exhibition’s theme as follows:

  • Sanghoon Kang’s geometric, architectural landscapes vividly capture the sounds of music he enjoys, reimagining musical notes into visual form. His works visually represent the rhythm, tone, or emotion of a piece of music.

  • Kyungmin Kate Lee uses photography and video to create landscapes that reflect on social dynamics and identity, embodying the harmonious energy that vibrates through life.

  • Heejung Shin creates abstract landscapes using Han-Ji, traditional mulberry paper. Her collages evoke the sounds of winds and rustling leaves, expressing the nostalgic and transient feelings of life.

  • Ellee SY Lee orchestrates layers of colors, shapes, and lines with natural motifs and creates imaginary oil and acrylic paintings. She believes that, like music, painting can provide emotional comfort to fragile souls.

  • Che Ree Kwon approaches her acrylic and mixed media work similarly to jazz music, improvising with colors, shapes, and lines to reveal the rhythmic, vibrant aspects of life. Her emotional abstraction explores the complexity of our inner world.

  • Kyungsun Kim’s wood prints highlight the beauty of nature, with the delicate engraving lines evoking a sense of tranquility, like the sound of silence.

As our group works combine traditional, architectural, and natural elements, we are delighted to have our collective exhibition at Gallery 191, surrounded by the beauty of historic, architectural, and natural environments. Through Sounds Across Landscape: Intersection between Art and Sound, we hope to offer viewers insight into our artistic motivations while providing a synesthetic sensation.
